Like many great things in life, our annual Chocolate Gelato February started as a mistake. Four years ago, I was trying out a sample chocolate syrup sent to me by a friend in Italy. The first batch turned into hard lumpy chunks. So I tried something different and wound up with tiny granular bits. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get a smooth chocolate gelato. It turned out, he sent me the wrong chocolate – this one was used to make chocolate chips and actually hardened and fragmented when it hit the cold gelato mix. My wife came in, saw my myriad of mistakes and said “What are you doing, making different chocolate flavors for February?” I quickly replied that was exactly what I was doing and though none of those mistaken chocolates ever made it, the idea of “Chocolate Gelato February” was born. Chocolate Balsamic Strawberry – Fresh Strawberries are macerated for two days in syrup made from reduced balsamic vinegar, then blended with our dark chocolate gelato.
Turtle – Just like the famous candy, our chocolate gelato is blended with rich Argentinian Dulce de Leche caramel and fresh toasted pecans.
Gianduja – An Italian staple, chocolate gelato and our fragrant pure hazelnut gelato.
Rocky Ride – A full flavored taste bud assaulting version of the kid’s classic – our chocolate gelato with homemade marshmallows from Zingerman’s Bakehouse and roasted Virginia Peanuts.
Chocolate HEAT – Inspired by the fantastic hot chocoate of Mexico, our dark chocolate gelato is combined with cinnamon and just enough cayenne pepper to make it dangerous.
And, of course, full-flavor, delicious, plain ol’ chocolate!
